Hope and Serenity

Diggnation reports: "After dissapointing movie ticket sales, it seemed that Joss Whedon's Serenity would en up as a failure in the books. Think again. Over 2 million DVDs sold, plus rentals and TV rights add up to more than $60 million. Could this convince Universal to get a Special Edition out? or even a sequel?"

Hopefully, this guy's optimism catches on and push the sequel to Serenity into the realms of reality and perhaps spawn a new TV series for the struggling franchise. So what are you waiting for browncoats? Go get 'em Deeveedees and help the struggle to keep the frontier free.

A Reunion of Sorts

I recently attended a sort of mini-reunion of high school batch mates. It was great to see old (not that they look old), familiar faces. What I realized at that get-together is that old habits are hard to ditch. As friends started arriving, I got to see two fellow CAT officers and my immediate reaction was to salute them (they were ranked higher than me is why). I actually saluted one of them. The reactions I got were more or less variations of the same theme: they couldn’t believe that I grew taller – even taller than some of them; and that I am actually, in point of fact, a lawyer. I’m not sure how I should feel about both but I’m pretty sure the latter is not in any way a compliment. Had I not grown an inch since high school (which would leave me at 4’11”), would the fact that I joined the legal profession be a little more believable or acceptable? Is a midget lawyer less bizarre than a late-blooming dork who got lucky at the bar exams? Do I look like a lawyer? Well, in fairness to my batch mates, the answer is no. A convict yes, but an attorney, nope. Even judges I think resist the urge to ask for a copy of my certificate of membership to the bar when I appear in court. Heh, story of my life.
A few pounds more than some would like to have, others with less hair than they might be happy with, chit chats on families and the not so uncommon nit picking on calorie counts and cholesterol contents punctuating conversations and trips down memory lane – all of which was aptly (and unmercifully I might add) accompanied by 80’s music – the gathering was a pleasing cacophony of tales, laughter and cheers (oh and the occasional jeers of course, it’s a high school reunion after all). I’m glad I came. The promise of reconnecting with the past was enough, but I got more. Thanks to the organizers and sponsors!
